OneWorld Spotlight: Katie Sunde

Family Nurse Practitioner Katie Sunde, APRN

Family Nurse Practitioner Katie Sunde, APRN, joined OneWorld in 2023 to give back to the city she was born and raised in. With prior experience in community health, Katie said she has always enjoyed caring for people who have barriers to health care.

“It’s important that everyone in the community can access health care, not just the fortunate,” Katie said. “At OneWorld, the bar is set at going above and beyond for our patients. Everyone who works here expects excellence out of themselves and others.”

Katie received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Nebraska Methodist College and later earned her master’s in nursing from University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Her passion for community health began while training to become a nurse practitioner. During that time, she completed rotations with Charles Drew Health Center at the Campus for Hope, where she provided care for people in treatment for addiction. She then went on to practice family medicine at Charles Drew, where her favorite place to practice was the Siena Francis House.

When thinking about how to prioritize all of a patient’s needs, Katie reflects on the advice given to her by a wise physician. The advice was to not only pick the medical priorities, but the things that are important to the patient too. That approach builds trust and encourages the patient to come back.

Outside of work, Katie is a mom to a 3-year-old boy and two dogs. She said something that might surprise others to know is that she has a “bad habit of accruing animals” and can’t pass up a stray.

As she moves forward in her career, she is working to learn more about pediatrics and women’s health, and she greatly enjoys working in adolescent health.

Said Katie: “OneWorld is full of providers so knowledgeable and passionate in their areas. They are always sparking new interests in me and make me want to be better.”
