Growing connections
OneWorld hosts baby shower to connect patients to community resources
It is often said that raising a child takes a village. Last month, OneWorld hosted a baby shower to open more doors into the community for prenatal and postnatal patients.
“Events like these provide our moms and moms-to-be the opportunity to engage with community resources,” said Social Services Supervisor, Idania Ramirez. “Having this type of support and sense of community is beneficial because it can aid in addressing the health and social needs of our patients.”
At the baby shower, over 100 prenatal and postnatal patients connected with OneWorld services including the marketplace, social services, WIC, Learning Community Center of South Omaha and many other community organizations.
Representatives from each team and organization brought informational resources and baby supplies including diapers, car seat covers, bottles, wipes and portable changing pads for each patient to take with them. Patients could also enter into a raffle to win prizes donated by community partners including car seats, strollers and Pack n’ Plays.
“You could tell on their faces that they were really glad they came,” said Development Manager – Events & Volunteers, Courtney Spurgeon. “I think some of the moms were shocked they ended up with so much stuff, and by how many organizations were there.”
Providing additional access to information and resources outside of the clinical setting can help patients achieve better health outcomes. By working together, more people can focus on staying connected rather than worrying about how to connect.
“We are so thankful for all of the help our partners, volunteers and staff provided,” said Spurgeon. “This event made it apparent that both the need and the services are there, they just need to be connected. We’re happy to play a role in people making connections and look forward to future events.”
