OneWorld Spotlight: Sam Balk

Family Medicine Physician Assistant Sam Balk, PA-C, joined OneWorld in 2010, after working in private practice and earning multiple health-related degrees. While still a graduate student, Sam was involved with a project that helped shape his career goals.

“It was my first experience working with at-risk groups and the underserved,” Sam said. “I knew at that time I wanted to work with groups in need.”

That project, evaluating diabetes and exercise on the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska’s Reservation in Macy, was part of his training while pursuing a Master of Exercise Science at University of Nebraska Omaha. He then went on to earn his Master of Physician Assistant Studies at University of Nebraska Medical Center. Sam has also earned a certification in athletic training, and holds a teaching degree in K-12 physical education and health.

Though Sam worked in private practice for several years after earning his physician assistant degree, OneWorld has been his work home for nearly 15 years. The people, he said, are the best part of OneWorld.

“I really have the most amazing coworkers,” Sam said. “In addition to this, I get to take care of people from all over the world and learn not just about them, but their families and cultures.”

Outside of work, Sam enjoys spending time with his active family. His two teenage daughters both play soccer and basketball, and they also are involved in theater. Sam’s wife is a dietician certified in oncology. He said that together, they balance hectic work schedules with their children’s activities. In his downtime, he also enjoys reading, golf and exercise.

When asked about the best piece of advice he’s received, Sam said: “Don’t be afraid to fail, as life is always the best teacher. Learn from your mistakes and don’t repeat them.”
