A historic South Omaha site once home to the world’s largest livestock market is set to undergo yet another transformation to meet the needs of the day.

Two new four-story buildings — for health care services and senior citizen housing — will rise in 2012 at the old Omaha Stockyards site near 30th and L Streets, thanks to an infusion of funds from the new federal health care law.

The buildings are part of an expansion of OneWorld Community Health Centers, which already leases the three lower floors of the historic Livestock Exchange Building.

As reported by Jeffery Robb of the Omaha World-Herald: On Tuesday, July 26th the Omaha City Council unanimously approved plans  for OneWorld Community Health Centers to build two four-story buildings outside South Omaha’s Livestock Exchange Building.

That means the organization can proceed constructing its clinics and senior citizen apartments despite some concern in the community that the new buildings would impair the view of the historic Livestock Exchange Building.

The $12.1 million project will receive up to $350,000 through a property tax incentive and a $300,000 zero-interest loan through federal funds.

City Councilman Garry Gernandt, who represents South Omaha, said the front of the Livestock Exchange Building will not be obstructed.
